⚠️ Safety Warnings & Safe Operating Practices
Large-diameter surfacing/planing bits generate severe cutting forces and high chip volumes. Strictly observe the following workshop safety procedures:
1. Anchor the Workpiece Securely: Clamp, wedge, or bolt the stock directly to your flat reference table (bench dogs, wedge stops, or heavy-duty F-clamps). Loose timber will be thrown violently by the cutter.
2. Maintain Two-Handed Grip: Keep both hands firmly on the equipment at all times while guiding the sled—either using both dedicated sled handles, or placing one hand on the router's main grip and the other on the sled frame/handle. This ensures total control over cutting forces and prevents tipping. Never place hands under the base plate or near the spinning router collet.Physical Power Disconnect: Always unplug the router at the wall before zeroing bit depth, swapping cutters, or cleaning out debris.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear impact-rated eye protection, hearing protection (ear defenders), and a well-fitted dust mask (minimum N95/FFP2) to guard against airborne hardwood particulate. Do not wear loose sleeves, jewelry, or baggy gloves near the high-speed spindle.


Recommended Depth of Cut & Pass Overlap Guidelines:
1. Do Not Overload the Cutter: Because surfacing/spoilboard bits feature large cutting diameters (typically 35–50 mm / 1.5–2 inches or more), taking overly aggressive cuts creates massive lateral torque. Limit your single-pass depth of cut to 0.5 – 1.5 mm (1/32" – 1/16") for hardwoods (such as oak, maple, or walnut) and end-grain work, and no more than 1.5 – 2.0 mm (approx. 5/64") for softwoods.
2. Prevent Chatter and Thermal Buildup: Forcing deep passes induces heavy spindle vibrations (chatter marks), premature carbide dulling, wood burnishing, and risks violent workpiece kickback or structural deflection.
3. Multi-Pass Strategy: Always level the workpiece in multiple light, progressive passes rather than a single deep cut. This ensures maximum surface uniformity, cleaner shearing without tear-out, and prolonged tool life.
4. Step-Over Overlap: When adjusting the carriage laterally for the next lane, maintain a 25%–30% step-over overlap with the previous cut path to avoid leaving unplaned ridges across the surface.
